Profession Equality - A Photo Project

As a kid, I was once taught that every occupation is valuable and worthy, regardless of the material outcome or the spiritual value. And that is true. We are all contributing something beautiful to life and society. And that something, whether big or small, has a certain impact on us. And that is also the concept behind this topic.

I want to express this concept through a documentary photo project. This project is a collection of twenty-eight photos of people from different backgrounds and career paths. To be more specific, I will position myself behind the person, and I will take photos of them from their shoulder up to their head, along with their working environments/scenarios in front of them. In this collection, I will take photos in the form of POV (Point of View) because it allows me to put myself into other people’s situations and explore people’s visions and perspectives when facing various career paths. Through this project, I want to have a better understanding and have a first-person experience of all the jobs out there. From that, I want to highlight the importance of a person’s job as well as show appreciation for what they are doing and for all the efforts they have put into their work. Because every profession is noble.

Hieu, a vehicle washer

“I have been doing this for almost a decade. I love this job. And I do this job for fun.
I’m old, you know. Money is not that important to me anymore. This is just something that I do to keep me away from boredom.”
Hai, a vehicle mechanic

“What makes me love this job? Money. I love money, so I love my job.
I have a lot of customers with broken motorbikes coming here every day, and that’s good news for me.”
Chau, a fruit seller

“I love fruits. I eat a lot of fruit too. And I sell fruits because I simply like to sell them.
”Buon co ban, bam co phuong”, you know. It would help if you have friends who share the same hobby as you. And this is my hobby - selling fruits.”
Huong, a butcher

“I just love to serve my customers every day. My home is here, in the market, so I figured that we should sell as well.
Selling meats is just an excuse for me to have something to sell; my real joy is to see customers at my store every day.”
Tuan, a watch fixer

“I have a brother who has a camera collection. His passion is about taking photos. If you need anything, I can link you up with him.
As for me, I have a different passion from my brother: watches. And I fix watches for a living.
I have orders every day, and that makes me happy because I get to contribute something to this life.”
Trong, a key maker

“Back in the old days, I used to have a camera. I sometimes still use it to take photos of my family.
This job is just an addition to my income. If anyone needs the keys to the door, I am the guy you call.”
Hiep, a tailor

“Me and my wife have done this job for a decade now. We married and shared the same interests, so we decided to open a tailor store and work from home.
Now we are passing this over to our children as well.”
Dung, a teacher

“I chose this job because I love students, who are the country's future. I like to be the one who rides the boat and guides students on their path to success.
It takes much patience, of course, to teach you guys, especially the ”naughty” ones. But in the end, the results are rewarding.
I had students who still remember me, like you. And that’s happy enough for me.”
Tom, a barber

“Haircut is a way for me to express my style. I find that the barbershop is a suitable environment for my style of working.
It creates freedom and joy for me and I get to meet customers that match the same vibe as mine, so I love this job a lot.”
Trieu, a restaurant receptionist

“I like to talk to customers because I am talkative. This job allows me to enhance my communication skills and my language.
Although this place has a tight working schedule, it is still fun thanks to my colleagues.”
Nhim, a barista

“I like the energy of this job. It makes me energetic and enthusiastic. I have met a lot of customers, so I know what they want and think.
Working as a bartender gives me a lot of experience in both dealing with clients and how to mix drinks. I drink a lot, so working in this position suits me best.”
Ut, a drink seller

“Ut have been selling here for 19 years. Ut enjoy having a lot of customers every day. But Ut don’t care about money.
Ut only care about having fun and partying with Ut’s neighbors around here.”
Thanh, a rice seller

“I like doing business, but I had a long time figuring out a sustainable business model.
Then one day, I decided that I would sell com tam. Everybody needs to eat, right? So everybody would come to me. It’s that simple.”
Thao, a waitress

“I had the chance to work as a waitress at a local restaurant through one of my friends. Although it is a thick schedule, I still enjoy it because I love to serve customers and satisfy them.
And this job makes good money, enough for me to support my family and my education. I still have a hard time balancing work and study but I have to try.”
Kien, a construction worker

“I have worked here for a very long time. I basically deal with everything, from cement to steel, to even painting.
Life of a construction worker, what can I say? But every day I get around three hundred to four hundred Vietnam Dong, so that’s a fair trade for me.”
Phong, a security guard

“I have worked here for seven years. I love this job, I really do. People always say to me that I deserve a better job. No. I love this job.
I worked enough to love it. I cannot imagine what it would be like if I don’t love this job.”
Thuy, a street vendor

“I sell everything. I love to sell. I love to make things. Banh trang tron, tre tron, xoai lac, you name it. I will stick to this job as long as it makes me money.”
Luong, a shoes cleaner

“I like this job because it makes me money. Going around the city looking for customers, it’s tough but it’s fun.
To sum up, it doesn't matter what the occupation is, as long as it feeds my family.”
Hai, a motorbike taxi driver

“This job is comfortable and time flexible. That is why I love this job. But I feel like before the pandemic, I can comfortably talk to customers and know more about them.
And ever since the pandemic, I feel like everyone is more introverted. They are not as open as before anymore, which is kind of sad.”
Quang, a cyclo driver

“Currently, I am taking on transferring advertising signs. I only have tourists asking me to drive around once every five to seven days.
I used to drive around the central of Saigon. Back then, my cyclo was very new. I loved it like my child. I painted it, and decorated it.
But overtime, I saw other cyclo drivers charging customers at a lower price, so I stopped driving around the center and moved to other places.”
Nghia, a shipper

“This is a customer service job, you know. People pay me to do my job, so I do it. If I’m enthusiastic about my job, they will be happy too.
They even pay me extra because of my enthusiasm. This way of working is efficient.”
Truc, a garbage cleaner

“It is simply my job - to keep the city clean. I want to keep my city clean in the eyes of tourists. Besides that, I also like to receive my paycheck every month.”
Dang, a traffic police officer

“I like to clear the road for people to have a clear traffic path. I hate people who park or stop and block the traffic in the process.
There’s literally a no parking and a no-stopping sign at the corner of the street. Can’t you read the signs?”
Luan, a gas station worker

“I chose this job because it is more stable than most other jobs. This is an everyday-demand job because people need gas to ride around.
The global gas price is changing every week, but not significantly, so overall it is still stable.”
Truc, a pharmacist

“I have been in the medical industry for a long time. My mission is to help people overcome their diseases and illnesses, and I am happy to see them get well.
I am passing this job to my son, who is also studying medicine at the university. He seems happy and satisfied with this job, which is good enough for me.
Children come first 100% of the time, so happy child, happy life, I guess.”
Nga, a nurse

“This is a really heavy job. I usually receive calls late at night telling me to come immediately when I am supposed to sleep.
You can say that life pushed me to choose this job, but I have to complete my role as a nurse, to help people recover fast and overcome their sickness.
People are busy around here. There’s barely time to rest or even take a nap. Just try hard, what can I say.”
Giang, a clothes seller

“I love fashion, so I am thrilled to work in an environment related to my interests. In particular, I get to interact with many customers, and sometimes consulting and styling for customers also makes me love this job more. I also learn more about soft skills such as communication, and time management to balance between studying and working, as well as learning how to manage the store's booth, warehouse, and business operations.”
Duy, a graphic designer

“I am a dreamy guy. So I chose design because I like creativity. I don’t like to be constrained within the framework. I like to think outside the box.
I transfer my thoughts and my style through my works, from then creating my own visual aesthetics. I also take demand jobs to have more sources of income.
Also, studying design allows me to ask my parents for more equipment like a headphone, a set of PCs, and an ergonomic chair for my spine.”
