“Duy Dinh” Logo - A Short 3D Animation

This animation is an intro for my logo identity. Made in 3D, this is my most recent work.

Process

Ideation

I thought that I should treat myself as a brand. So why not have an intro to my own brand? That is where the idea came from. My idea for the intro animation is to have a one-shot animation displaying the logo at the end of the video. I realized that my logo has a path between the letters N and D. So I thought of a ball rolling down the path with lights popping up according to the ball’s location, like guiding lights.

3D Process

I parented a light to the ball and animated the ball to make it roll.

This took me two days to figure out. I used a Geometry Proximity Node to make the lights pop up wherever the ball went. I duplicated another layer of the logo, and I used an Ico Sphere as my instance since Ico Sphere is easier to manipulate. I set the material for the Ico Sphere. I used Geometry Proximity to calculate the distance and scale of the sphere whenever the ball comes close. It also took me a day to figure out the map range. And the rest is just keyframing the ball and the camera position.

During the animation, I found that the gap in the letter D feels pretty dull. So I animated the word “DUYDINH” on the three sides of the letter and at the opposite letter D to make it blink, add more dynamism, and make the scene brighter at the same time.

To make the shine effect swipe through the logo, I simply added an area light, positioned it just where the logo and the light hit each other, lengthened the light, and animated the position to make it swipe through the logo.
